Scenic view of the Nahanni National Park in the Canadian Northwest Territories

Duration: 7 days

Ideal for: adventure seekers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers

Day 1

Begin your journey with a flight to Fort Simpson, a small community in the Northwest Territories, located at the junction of the Liard and Mackenzie rivers. Fort Simpson is the gateway to Nahanni National Park.

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by your guide from a sustainable tour operator. Meet your fellow adventurers, and your guide will provide an overview of the park’s history, wildlife, and Leave No Trace principles. You’ll also go over gear requirements and pack for the upcoming days.

Take a walk around this small historic town. Learn about its Indigenous Dene culture, visit local art galleries like the Open Sky Creative Society showcasing indigenous craftsmanship and explore the Fort Simpson Visitor Information Centre to gain insight into the area’s rich history.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, you'll embark on a small aircraft or floatplane for a flight over the river to the Nahanni National Park boundary. You’ll be landing in a remote wilderness area, where you'll set up camp for the next few days.

Begin your rafting journey down the South Nahanni River. The river is world-renowned for its dramatic scenery, including towering canyons, rugged cliffs, and limestone formations. This first day will take you along the river’s scenic stretches, with a chance to get comfortable with your raft and team.

Continue downstream to the iconic Virginia Falls, which are twice the height of Niagara Falls. This is one of the most awe-inspiring natural landmarks in North America. Spend some time soaking in the spectacular sight and sound of the falls.

As the night sky opens up, enjoy the incredible stargazing opportunities. The area is far from light pollution, so you’ll have a clear view of the Milky Way and constellations in the northern sky.

Day 3

Wake up early to a hot drink and embark on a morning wildlife safari. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, moose, bison, and caribou. Your guide will help you spot animals from a safe distance.

Go rafting through the Nahanni River Canyon, where the river carves through towering limestone cliffs. The canyon walls can rise more than 1,000 feet, and the views are simply breathtaking.

Day 4

Continue rafting downstream, navigating white-water rapids and calm stretches of river. Enjoy the variety of landscapes as you approach the Cirque of the Unclimbables, a breathtaking mountain range that rises sharply above the river.

Day 5

In the morning, raft or canoe to Rabbitkettle Hot Springs, where you can hike to the springs and enjoy a natural soak in the warm waters. This is a unique geothermal feature of the park, with ancient mineral formations.

After a relaxing soak, embark on a hike to a high point with panoramic views of the Nahanni River and surrounding valleys.

Day 6

Spend a day at Nahanni Butte to learn more about the Dene Culture and meet some indigenous people. Your guide will introduce you to the Dene culture, sharing stories of the community’s history, spirituality, and connection to the land.

Visit the Nahanni Butte Cultural Centre to learn more about the traditional way of life, the importance of the Nahanni River, and the community’s efforts to preserve their cultural heritage. You’ll see artifacts, photographs, and learn about the Dene language and the spiritual significance of the Nahanni wilderness.

Day 7

After breakfast, pack up camp and begin your journey back to Fort Simpson. You’ll take a scenic flight back to the community, where your experience in Nahanni National Park concludes.
