Day 1
Arrive in Debark, the main town and gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. This can be done by car from Gonder (approximately 2 hours), or directly via a flight if coming from Addis Ababa.
Meet your local guide and porter team (if required) who will be with you throughout the trek. Your guide will provide an overview of the park, its flora, fauna, and cultural significance.
The park's entrance fee is paid at the Debark Park Office, where you will get the necessary permits.
Day 2
After breakfast, begin your trek from Debark to Sankaber, which is located at 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). The trek takes around 4-5 hours. The trail offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape, including deep valleys, rugged peaks, and farmlands. You'll pass through small villages where locals often work in agriculture.
Upon arrival at Sankaber, you’ll set up camp. rom here, you can see the Gelada baboons at the edge of the cliffs. These unique primates are endemic to the Simien Mountains and are known for their distinctive red chest patches.
Enjoy the sunset over the Simien Mountains!
Day 3
After breakfast, begin your trek towards Gich. This segment is a bit longer, taking about 6-7 hours depending on your pace. The trail will take you across a variety of terrains: from grasslands and wooded paths to more rocky areas.
Along the way, enjoy wildlife spotting. This is a great section for seeing Walia ibex, an endangered mountain goat species endemic to the park.
Upon reaching Gich, take a rest and have a packed lunch or snack. From Gich, you'll continue for a short stretch to Chenek.
As you approach Chenek, the views become even more spectacular, with the jagged cliffs of the Simien Mountains looming overhead. Chenek is a popular camping site and a fantastic location for wildlife viewing, especially Gelada baboons.
Day 4
After breakfast, hike to Imet Gogo, one of the most famous viewpoints in the park. The round trip hike is about 5-6 hours. Imet Gogo offers panoramic views over the Tekeze River Gorge and the surrounding peaks, with some of the most stunning landscapes in Ethiopia.
After soaking in the views at Imet Gogo, return to Chenek to rest. The trek down is easier, but still offers incredible landscapes.
Enjoy another night at the Chenek campsite. In the evening, relax and reflect on the day’s experiences. The Simien Mountains’ isolation and tranquility make it a perfect setting for stargazing.
Day 5
After breakfast, begin your descent back to Debark. This final trek is around 4-5 hours and takes you through scenic landscapes as you make your way back to the town.
Upon arrival in Debark, you’ll be met by your vehicle for the return transfer. If time permits, visit local markets to purchase handmade crafts or locally produced products.
After an incredible trek through one of Ethiopia’s most iconic national parks, you will either head to Gonder for a connecting flight or continue your journey elsewhere in Ethiopia.
